Schenectady County is part of the Albany-Schenectady- Troy, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area also known as the Capital District and is located west of the confluence of the Mohawk with the Hudson River. It includes territory on both the north and the south sides of the Mohawk River. Schenectady is the seat of Schenectady County.
As of the 2010 the city had a population of 66,135, 26,252 (2000 data) households, and 14.051 families residing in the city.
Schenectady is home to Proctors’s Theater a wonderful art center. Built in 1926 as a vaudeville/movie theater and has been recently renovated. It is the home to “Goldie”, a Wurlitzer theater pipe organ. Proctors was the sites of one of the first public demonstrations of televisions, projecting an image from a studio at the GE plant a mile away. Proctors is home to 3 theaters.
General Electric Company, known as GE, once called Schenectady home, is still the largest employer in the county. Union College and Schenectay college are also located in the city.
The film The Way We Were was filmed on location at Union College.
Amtrack, the national passenger rail system, provides regular service to Schenectady. Schenectady has freight rail service from Canadian Pacific Railway and CSX Transportation.
