The Ballston Spa village was incorporated in 1807 and lies on the border of two towns. The village is located southwest of Saratoga Springs in Saratoga County. As of the census of 2011, there were 5,420 people. The zip code for Ballston Spa is 12020. The village was first settled in 1771.
Much like it’s Northern neighbor, Saratoga Spa, Ballston Spa was famous for its water springs Ballston Spa is the site of many once-famous mineral water springs and was a popular “watering hole” for the rich and famous during the hey day of the mineral water industry. The mineral springs were used for healing in hospitals – the water contains common salts and carbonates of magnesium. The National Bottle Museum is also located in the village. From the National Bottle Museum website, “The National Bottle Museum is located on Rte. 50 in the heart of the village of Ballston Spa, New York. The museum occupies a three story brick commercial building in the historic business district of what was once a flourishing resort community in the 1800s.”
Visiting one of Ballston Spa’s many lodgings, eateries and storefronts along quaint Victorian era sidewalks and finely decorated storefronts is a wonderful way to enjoy a day of shopping, eating and relaxation. There are many antique shops found in town as well. Some homes in town have been designated New York state historical landmarks including the home of the birthplace of Abner Doubleday, American Civil War hero and inventor of baseball.
Ballston Spa is the place to be all year round but especially during the summer months! The Saratoga County Fair is held at the Saratoga Fairgrounds in Ballston Spa every July for 6 days and nights. It is one of the oldest county fairs in New York State. The Ballston Spa Farmers’ Market is celebrating its 10th year! Offering the best in local farm produce, meats, eggs, flowers and greenhouse plants, baked goods, specialty foods and handcrafted items the market is open for the summer season in Wiswall Park, on Front and Low Streets in downtown Ballston Spa. Summer market days are Thursdays, 3-6 pm and Saturdays, 9 am-12 pm. Concerts in the Park Series also takes place at Wiswall Park gardens on Thursdays evenings after the farmer’s market closes,. This free concert series is a signature event in Ballston Spa and draws hundreds of visitors, as well as residents of the greater Ballston Spa community, to the village’s historic downtown. Also, Movies in the Park takes place once a month at Wiswall Park – all movies are free! Please bring your chairs and blankets (mosquito spray also suggested). This event is made possible by generous business and resident sponsors.
Stroll throughout the village of Ballston Spa on the First Friday of every month, from 6-9 pm and enjoy special happenings in many of our downtown shops, restaurants and galleries. Live music, art displays and demonstrations, refreshments and featured shop promotions.
Ballston Spa has its own school district. There are four elementary schools – Milton Terrace North and Milton Terrace South (K-5), Wood Road Intermediate School (3-5) and Malta Avenue Intermediate School (3-5). The middle school is the Ballston Spa Middle School and the high school is Ballston Spa High School. Currently, Ballston Spa School District is ranked within the top 20 districts in the Capital Region of New York State. There are two private schools – St Mary’s on Thompson Street and Spa Christian on Greenfield Ave.
